Physician Staffing Planning

The University of New Mexico (UNM) envisioned a new hospital in Rio Rancho (Sandoval County) to support both the healthcare needs of the burgeoning community and its own teaching capacities. Needing an accurate picture of future physician demand and availability, UNM hired the Innova Group for Innova’s proven ability to discreetly evaluate complex variables while managing the various interests of academic healthcare stakeholders.

With the central goal of assuring full utilization of UNM’s planned physical assets, Innova’s charge was to quantify the demand for physicians by inpatient and outpatient services compared to current and projected availability. After helping stakeholders define their service area and understand relevant data, Innova began clarifying the future market picture by creating multiple market share capture scenarios by physician specialty. Innova then compared physician alignment with planned physical assets by calculating key characteristics required for both inpatient and outpatient services. The resulting report provided a comprehensive understanding of the required number of physicians, by specialty, as well as the projected population-based demand for inpatient and outpatient services.
